Innovative research groups through synergetic cooperation between the departments

The three departments of the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design (ISM+D) – structural analysis, data-driven structural dynamics and façade technology – form the foundation for the institution's pioneering research activities. Each department contributes unique perspectives and expertise, which are linked through close interdisciplinary collaboration. This co-operative structure enables the development of innovative solutions that address current challenges in the construction industry.

Innovation through diversity of expertise

At ISM+D, experts in a wide range of disciplines from the fields of energy-efficient construction, additive manufacturing, glass construction, building with paper and structural dynamics work together. The interdisciplinary exchange generates new ideas and methods for a more sustainable construction industry.

Structural analysis

The field of structural analysis deals with modelling and analytical calculation methods for structures in civil engineering. The Bachelor's degree programme teaches the essential principles for structurally simple load-bearing structures, while the Master's degree programme focuses on two-dimensional load-bearing structures, model abstraction and numerical calculation methods. The aim is to equip students with the necessary skills for finding creative solutions in research and practice. Another focus is on “Scientific Machine Learning”, whereby methods of artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning are taught with reference to civil engineering.

Data-driven building dynamics

The Department of Data-Driven Structural Dynamics, headed by Prof Dr Clemens Hübler at the Technical University of Darmstadt, is concerned with analysing and predicting dynamic phenomena in structures. In addition to wind turbines, the focus is on bridges and other rail transport infrastructures. By using data-driven methods such as model adaptation and structural health monitoring, the department aims to increase the reliability and safety of these structures. A particular focus is on the integration of artificial intelligence and probabilistic approaches for more precise prediction of structural behaviour and the development of efficient monitoring strategies. In addition, the department deals with methods for reducing the energy consumption of buildings and settlements, including zero-energy buildings and energy-positive settlement components.

Façade technology

The Facade Technology department deals with the development and optimisation of facade systems that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements. This includes the investigation of building physics principles, the integration of renewable energies and the use of innovative materials in order to realise sustainable and energy-efficient building envelopes.

In the Master's degree programme in Civil Engineering, the department offers the unique specialisation ‘Structural Glass and Façade Construction’, which provides students with a comprehensive scientific engineering education in this field. Close co-operation with industry, particularly in the Frankfurt/Heidelberg area, provides practical teaching content and improves the career prospects of graduates. The department is also part of the European Facade Network, an association of European universities specialising in facade construction.
