Glass and Polymers II
Mechanics of Polymers

Just gluing? Does it hold?

First, fundamentals of continuum mechanics and material models will be discussed in the lecture. Focus is on non-linear material laws that are characteristic for rubber and silicone materials. In addition to theoretical lecture content, special features of experiemntal working with polymer materials are addressed. In particular, various failure and damage models are introduced in detail and an insight is given into the current research fields of the Institute of Statics and Design.

Course Contents

  • Classification of polymer materials
  • Fundamentals of continuum mechanics (nonlinear stress and distortion measures, deformation rates)
  • Material modeling (elasticity, hyperelasticity, viscosity, plasticity) with application examples and measurement methods
  • Damage and failure models
  • Modeling of composite materials
