Façade Technology I
Technologies and Components of the Building Envelope

Multifunctional Requirements of Façade Systems in the Future

Façade technology I deals with the mutual dependencies between façade construction and the building. Special attention is paid to construction principles, system solutions, physical and functional requirements against the background of current trends in the field of façades and construction technologies. Theoretically taught basics are directly applied and thus show the students important aspects of the everyday life of a façade engineer.

Course Contents

In the module façade technology I, the functionality of façades and the most important aspects in implementing them into buildings are explained. The state of the art is presented and areas for potential research are addressed.

Topics of current importance include intelligent façades with focus on thermal performance as well as new types of glass products (including smart glass, vacuum insulating glass) and additive manufacturing applications.

Besides a lecture series, the module includes a practical component. The goal here is to develop new types of façade systems and integrate them into buildings. Furthermore, in a guest lecture experts (façade engineers, architects…) will present practical challenges of implementing façades in buildings.

The course content includes the following:

  • Complex construction principles and façade systems
  • Methods to integrate façades and related technologies into the design process
  • Evaluation of important façade functions by calculation and simulation
  • Development of innovative façade solutions taking into account the methods learnt throughout the semester
