Structural Analysis I
Basics of Structural Analysis

The academic foundation of a civil engineer

Structural Analysis I covers the most basic methods for determining the distribution of internal forces within a structure.

Course Contents

  • Classification of load-bearing structures
  • Idealization in structural analysis
  • Static determinacy and usefulness of plane beam structures
  • Internal forces of pendulum and truss members (graphic statics, nodal section method, Ritter's section method, stiffness method)
  • Internal forces of statically determinate structures (equilibrium conditions, bending differential equation, internal force determination by means of a framework program, stress zero line and core area)
  • Principle of virtual displacements (PdvV) and pole plan
  • Principle of virtual forces (PdvK)
  • Bending lines of straight, plane beam structures
  • Stability
  • Actions on structures and safety concept
  • Pre-design of structures
