Building Physics
(Module 13-D3- M003)

Interrelationships of Building Physics

Knowledge of building physics is an essential prerequisite for the planning, execution and repair of buildings. In many cases, building damage can also be traced back to ignorance of the fundamentals of building physics. The aim of the course is therefore to demonstrate the basic interrelationships of heat, moisture and sound insulation and to explain them using simple examples of typical building constructions. Exercises are used to illustrate the various calculation methods.

Course Contents

  • Stationary thermal behavior of building components
  • Recognize problems of thermal bridges and measures to avoid them
  • Sorption behavior and the mechanisms of moisture transport
  • Interaction between temperature and humidity
  • Structural and plant engineering measures for energy-efficient construction
  • Basic principles of airtight construction
  • Evaluation of indoor climate, comfort and possibly associated mold problems
  • Basics of sound insulation
  • Computational component verification for airborne and impact sound insulation
  • Design of soundproof building structures
